Some may think that Joker in Super Smash Brothers seems like a weird fit, and that wouldn’t be far off. It seems like a very random choice. Normally, Super Smash Bros has been filled with former and current Nintendo characters, as well as characters from games that may not have been made by Nintendo but have appeared on a console at some point in time. However, how or why would they choose someone from Persona 5?
I was frantically looking all over the internet looking for signs of a Persona 5 coming to the Switch. Though this still may happen….(please…please…) turns out there are no plans at this time. Heart broken, I still had to know if Joker had made an appearance on a Nintendo platform. Turns out, in Japan, Atlas made a Persona game for the 3DS which featured the characters from Persona 5, so BOOM! CLOSE ENOUGH! LETS GET HIM IN SMASH!
Why I Want Joker In Smash
Joker (AKA Ren Amamiya in the Anime or Akira Kurusu in the Manga…for sake of simplicity, I will keep referring to him as Joker. My blog my rules) is a pretty amazing character that deserves to be seen more in different media. His story is based around being a hero in a world that does always take kindly to people standing up for the little people. He was wrongly accused of assaulting a wealthy man and forced to move in with a family friend after being expelled from his High School. He is just a kid that wanted to do right and stop a drunken adult from trying to harm a woman. Once he moved in with his family friend, he was immediately mocked and harassed by others around him because they saw him as a troublemaker. Through all of the trouble in his life, he never gave up. He kept his nose down and tried to make the best of it, until life changed when he gained a new persona and became part of a group known as the Phantom Thieves. (This is a pretty simplistic explanation of the story…for more information about Persona 5, I would recommend playing the game or you could read one of the first reviews that I made.)
How Will Joker Do In Smash?
I think Joker could be a pretty competitive character with some pretty impressive moves. In the game, Joker has a few interesting abilities that he could carry over to Smash:
- Joker has a gun that he uses as a ranged attack. This could act a lot like Fox or Falco and be a pretty good way to get some distance attacks on your enemy and rack up some percentage points.
- Joker uses a knife as his main weapon, so this could be his main weapon in the game. He could basically be your typical sword fighter in the game and use some flashy jumping attacks like the ones that he uses in the game.
- He could be a phantom fighter of sorts…pun intended. basically, I could see him being a fighter similar to Pokémon Trainer. I personally would hate this option, but I can see it happening all the same. Throughout Persona, Joker and the other Phantom Thieves would fight and convince other personas to follow and fight along side them, so it goes without saying that this could be a similar Pokémon tactic. They could choose three different personas that you can control and have Joker basically standing in the background.
Obviously I have a bias when it comes to Joker. I would love to see more of this character and having him in Smash seems like a pretty great thing that I never expected to want. When I saw the trailer during the Video Game Awards, I went through a bunch of emotions. I want them to do right by this character, and I honestly don’t know how they can mess this up. Even if they make him a phantom Pokémon Trainer, I think it would still be pretty cool to play as some different personas.
what do you think? Are you excited to see Joker come to Smash? What are your feelings on Smash so far? Let me know and lets start getting excited!
As always…thanks for reading!
